The American Cabinetmaker's Plow Plane, it's Design and Improvement 1700-1900, by John A. Moody

The American Cabinetmaker's Plow Plane

Another early out-of print comprehensive antique tool reference book.

This is a special leather-bound edition bought by Roger K. Smith, the noted antique plane author, and friend of John Moody. His name is printed in gold-leaf on the second page. 1981. 11 1/2 by 9 inches, 248 pages.

The plow plane actually does a fairly mundane task of making a groove in a board, as in the insides of a cabinet door frame, for the panel. But they were probably the most elaborate hand tools made.

This book defines plow planes, discusses the "search for parallelism", (keeping the skate and the fence in the same direction), and how different American inventors solved that problem.

There is a section on American plow plane characteristics, that shows the profiles of the fence and nuts. This is an important aid to establish correct parts on a plow plane.

Describes British patented plow planes. Outlines the history of American combination planes from the 1854 Multiform to the Stanley No. 55. Has American and British plow plane patent information.

A great book and a lifetime resource, Fine ....... $225.00
