Holly Patent Jointer Holly Patent Iron Smooth Plane

Patented July 6, 1852 by Birdsill Holly. This pre-Civil War is one of the earliest Metallic plane patents, and the first to have a metal cap instead of a wooden wedge. The large sizes are uncommon, an these small smooth planes are very hard to find.
It is 8 7/8 inches long, has a Butcher iron. I can't tell for sure what wood the original handle and knob are made from, because of the dry finish and patina, but it appears to be mahogany. There is a tight crack near the base of the handle. There are a few chips on the rear of the plane, maybe from banging off shavings. The japanned finish was thin. A lot of it is gone, but the dark patina looks good.
A desirable size of a very collectible plane, G+ .......... Sold $2600.00
