Metallic Plane Co. Smooth Plane
Desirable No. 3 size. All of the small Metallic Plane Co's planes are hard to find. This one with the fixed cap seems to be the rarest. The cast iron piece under the handle is 1 3/8 inches long. That's almost four times longer than Stanley's. It gives the plane a very graceful look, but it had to have been easily broken.
This one has the mushroom-shaped front knob, adjustable throat and lightly corrugated bottom distinctive to the Metallic Plane Co. They were the first to put corrugations on the bottoms of planes. The cutter is properly marked, and the Palmer and Storke's mark is stamped on the side of the bed. About 80% of the japanning remains.
