Phillips Improved Plough Plane

Phillips Improved Plough Plane

The Phillips Improved Plough Plane with its elegant form and decorative painted highlights is one of the most beautiful tools ever produced. This Improved model is marked on the skate with the Aug 13, 1867 patent date, and Boston Tool Co., 22 Kilby St. Boston.
Although the 1867 patent date is stamped on the skate, this is the later (and rarer) re-design from 1874. The first improved model was from 1872.
The main differences are a cowl on the left side of the body by the cutter, a long left-hand depth stop that attaches to both the front and back screw, and aside from an iron top plate, the fence is all wood.
The handle and fence are very crisp. The fence has a thin piece of rosewood glued to the inside edge to allow for a cleaner cut. Around 90% of the black japanning and gold and red pinstriping remain. Some minor pitting and stain on the bare metal surfaces, G+++ .....................Sold $3300.00
