Phillips Improved Plough Plane

Phillips Plough Plane

Russell Phillips of Gardiner, Maine Designed and patented one of the earliest American metallic Plow Planes. This Improved model is marked on the skate with the Aug 13, 1867 patent date, and Babson &' Repplier, 7 Doane St, Boston.
The Phillips Improved Plough Plane with its elegant form and decorative painted highlights is one of the most beautiful tools ever produced. It is very uncommon to find an example that still retains the red, blue and gold decoration. The painted highlights are what really helps set this plane apart from the rest. Since these plane's parts were hand-fitted, each part was marked with an assembly number, to facilitate re-assembly after finishing. This one has all of the parts marked with the number 30, which shows that they are original to the plane. The rosewood handle and fence detail are very crisp with only minor tool-box dings. For some reason there is chipping to the finish on the edges and inside of the handle, but there is still 80% remaining. This one is in Fine condition except for the paint loss, ...........
