Hollow Augers

[CLICK TO ORDER]

Hollow augers are used to cut round tenons for making chairs or wagon spokes. They are preceded with a spoke pointer to make a conical end that centers the hollow auger on the work.

A. A. Wood Hollow Auger Note: I get frequent questions for a copy of the instructions. They aren't much, but I can send you a copy. If you are having trouble with using the A. A. Wood Hollow Auger, the new original cutters have the point ground off, so then the cutter can get close to, and mostly parallel to, the throat, and the point doesn't stick out. Looking at the picture, the cutter is not ground completely parallel - it's a little wider at the outside, maybe for taking off more material as it gets wider? You should get a cleaner cut by grinding off that point. Here is a picture of one just out of the box.

  1. A. A. WOOD & SONS, adjustable hollow auger. These are considered to be the Cadillac of hollow augers. Fully adjustable, cuts from 1/4 to 1 1/4 inch diameters. This one is in crisp condition, 85% of the black enamel remains. Great length to the cutter which can use a bit of tuning. There is some minor patina on the bare-metal surfaces. A very nice tool that has had little use. I'll include a copy of the instructions, G++ .......... Sold $115.00

  3. A. A. WOOD & SONS, FORE AUGER. Marked with the Nov 27, 1900 patent date on the tang. Made to cut a 1 1/4 inch diameter tenon with a tapered shoulder. Then you can use a hollow auger for a smaller size. Will work on stock up to 2 7/8 inch diameter. It has a depth stop.
This seems to be especially suited for use making twig or pole furniture. The tapered shoulder adds a decorative touch and is a good way to mate the shoulder of the tenon with the curved, irregular surface of another branch. This rare tool is the only I have seen that will do this job.
Good length to the cutter. Almost all of the black enamel remains, Fine .......... $165.00
